Chapter Seven

Faraad’s stomach was in knots. This was the last thing he’d expected tonight, but he wasn’t so stupid that he’d pass up this chance to spend time with Kat.

They walked in companionable silence, though there was a definite undercurrent of tension there, and he wondered if she was anywhere near as nervous as she was.

She is only inviting you up to eat food. Calm down, he told himself. Not that it did any good for his nerves. Just the thought of spending time with Kat was enough to drive him insane.

They made it to the residence building and took the lift up to Kat’s floor. Before he knew it, they were in her quarters, and he was already surrounded by memories. Eating and talking with her at the table, washing dishes with her at the sink.

Devouring her like a starved male in the bedroom.

He shook himself out of it as she started hunting through the small kitchen for something to eat.

“I need to check in on my brothers,” he said, and she nodded. He took his comm out of his pocket and pressed the contact for home. Balor picked up right away.

“I will be home a bit later than I planned.”

“Are you still working?” Balor asked, and Faraad knew he was about to hear a speech about how he worked too much.

“No, I am going out to dinner. Did you look over the plans for the strike?” he asked. He glanced up to see Kat arranging some fruit and bread and some other things on a platter. The wine he’d brought was sitting on the counter.

“Yes, matron, I looked them over,” Balor drawled.

“Look them over again,” he said.

“I will. Relax. It will be fine.”

“It has to be.”

“I am a very talented pilot. What could go wrong?” Balor asked with a smirk.

“Your cockiness could make things go wrong,” Faraad answered, well aware that he was snarling. His brothers had a way of making that happen. He glanced up to see Kat nodding, and he guessed it was in agreement with him. At least, he hoped so.

“I know. I will be careful and focused. Relax.”

“Make sure little brother does his studies. And gets to bed at a decent hour.”

“Planning on staying out late, are we?” Balor asked, raising his eyebrows in a ridiculous manner. He heard Kat chuckle and he gave Balor a final glare before ending the communication.

“He is…” he shook his head.

“Drives you crazy, huh?” she asked, grinning as she set the platter of food down on the table. He opened the wine bottle and poured some of it into glasses for them, then brought them to the table.

“Yes, and not in a good way,” he answered as he sat down.

“Is there a good way to drive someone crazy?” she asked.

“You drive me crazy in a good way,” he answered, then could have kicked himself. She laughed, then sat down, smiling at him.

“Do I?” she asked, taking a sip of her wine.

“I think you already know the answer to that, Kat.
